Chapter 14. Caesarean Section and Breastfeeding

  • You just had surgery today, so prioritizing rest is key. Take painkillers if your wound hurts. Try to relax; this will facilitate your milk coming-in.

  • Gently massage your breasts before expressing or apply a warm compress for no more than 3 minutes. This can prevent blocked ducts and facilitate milk flow.

  • There is no need for lecithin at this point. If your colostrum is too thin, it can actually make it harder for the baby to suckle especially since he is likely tired. Keep in mind lecithin is not for prevention; it is generally recommended if you have a clogged duct. However, having some on hand just in case would not hurt.

  • Holding your baby skin-to-skin is the most effective way to stimulate the let-down reflex. However, if the anesthesia has not worn off yet, do not push yourself. Safety first.
